Neolithic burial sites found in Sofia

In the Slatina district of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, archaeologists have found several graves from the early Neolithic period. They are among the earliest burials found in the city. The graves were discovered during excavations before the construction of a residential building. One of the graves turned out to be double, with the remains of two people, probably an adult and a child. The remains will be studied in the laboratory of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to determine whether there was a kinship relationship between these people.

In addition to human skeletons, the graves contained various items: pottery, parts of a weaving tool, and a spindle. Objects indicate the existence of a settlement in the VII-VI centuries BC. Earlier, archaeologists found nearby equally ancient burial sites. A large city on the site of modern Sofia appeared in the first century ad and was part of the Roman Empire. The findings will help historians delve into the history of the Bulgarian capital.
