The beginning of collecting coins as an occupation for educated and wealthy people coincides with the heyday of the Renaissance at the turn of the 15-16 centuries. A huge interest in the ancient world, in its history and achievements, in ancient literature and art samples, aroused among the rich, noble and educated people of that time an interest in antique coins as witnesses of the era.

Evidence of the elitism of this hobby is the history of the Rothschild family, the founder of the dynasty of which, being a first-class supplier of collectible coins, using his acquaintances with influential numismatists of that time, earned his capital.

Polish coins of the medieval period have a huge number of fans both among the numismatists of our country and neighboring Poland. Historically, most of the finds of medieval Polish coins come from our country. Until the beginning of the 16th century, Polish coins were small in size due to a shortage of silver in Polish lands. But already in the first half of the 16th century, in exchange for grain, a huge amount of silver came to Poland, which, after the discovery of America, poured into Europe. This led to a huge variety of Polish medieval coins.
