Giovanni Piranesi - famous Italian architect who lived in the XVIII century. He is known for his graphic works on architectural themes, created a huge number of drawings of ancient monuments, as well as fantastic paintings. Piranesi's work significantly influenced representatives of Neoclassicism. The artist himself was inspired by the work of Venetian masters who worked in the Veduta genre.
Piranesi plays with scales in his drawings, showing contrasts due to the combination of small objects and incredibly spacious rooms. In the engravings of the author, you can easily recognize his style, the desire for monumentality, the desire to depict difficult-to-comprehend objects. A special place in Piranesi's work is occupied by Rome, where he lived the remaining 25 years of his life. In this ancient city, as always, he is interested in buildings and archaeological finds. Countless etchings depicting sarcophagi, plans of structures, urban ensembles and their schemes, monuments, were included in the publication "Roman antiquities", which has several volumes. Piranesi is one of the few artists who has become famous for graphics alone.
