Although bonistics appeared as an auxiliary historical discipline relatively recently, at the beginning of the XX century, collecting paper money began to get involved almost immediately after their first appearance. Today, this type of collecting is closely related to numismatics and is actively developing. In 1961, the International Bank Note Society was established, which focuses on the study of banknotes of the world.

The society was founded by the recently deceased bonist Colin Narbeth. He became interested in collecting banknotes as a schoolboy, and during his service in the Royal Navy, he added to the collection in every port that a ship called at. A more serious approach to the study of notaphily Colin Narbeth showed the work of a newspaper reporter. During this period of his life, he began to meet other famous bonists, and worked on a book about banknotes.

Throughout his life Colin Narbeth has written nearly two dozen books and numerous articles about collecting. In 1961, the first issue of the magazine that the collector worked on was published as part of the International Bank Note Society project. Bonist gave many interesting specimens from his collection to the British Museum.
