Guillaume Apollinaire is a French poet, a bright representative of the European literary avant-garde, who created, in addition to the usual written poetic works, poems-drawings, or calligrams. Figure poetry represents lines, words, letters, and signs arranged in a special way that all together form an illustration.

Apollinaire (real name Kostrovitsky) never received special education, lived for some time in Belgium, where he began writing poetry in the Walloon language. In the 1910s, the writer proved himself as a publicist and editor, wrote articles about new trends in painting at that time, and was familiar with prominent artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, and Marie Laurencin.

In 1917, there was a speech by Apollinaire, who, at the request of the writer and film Director Jean Cocteau, read the Manifesto "New spirit", which dealt with the art of the future. His prose stands out for its shocking, the author practiced automatic writing and strongly influenced the development of avant-gardism in General. The 1910s became important for art for another reason. During this period, Apollinaire unites poets, coining the term "surrealism", which characterizes the work of a new group of writers (the founder of the direction is considered to be the poet Andre Breton).

Guillaume Apollinaire fought at the front during world war I, where he volunteered in 1914. During the fighting, he was wounded, and in 1918, a few months after his marriage, he died of Spanish flu.

Below are the author's calligrams, which reflect the poet's bold approach to creativity.
