On this day, September 29, 1547, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born, who gave the world a legendary literary work that parodies the chivalric novels of that time – a book about the adventures of don Quixote of La Mancha. Literary activity is only one facet of the life of a famous Spanish writer. Cervantes has had many adventures in his lifetime.

Cervantes was born into a poor noble family. In his youth, the future writer left his native Castile, the reasons for this action are unknown to biographers. He went to Italy, where he discovered the depths of art and was inspired by the beauty of the Renaissance creations. Something prompted Cervantes to enlist in the military, and in 1570 he was enlisted in the Spanish Marines. After a few years of training, Cervantes went to war, was wounded in the battle of Lepanto, and participated in other battles. In 1575, during a trip to Barcelona, the ship carrying Miguel Cervantes and his brother Rodrigo was attacked by Algerian pirates. The writer remained in captivity for several years and was redeemed due to his services to the king.

After his release, he served in Portugal as an agent for the Royal Commissioner, and this period was not easy. Cervantes suffered from a lack of time for reading and literary creativity. In 1590, the writer planned to go to America, but never left for the New World. Cervantes married a noblewoman, receiving a small dowry upon marriage. He had a daughter born out of wedlock, Isabel de Cervantes. In addition to his main novel, the author wrote many other works: "Algerian customs", "Journey to Parnassus", collections of short stories.
