Another archaeological site located on the island of Khortytsia has delighted historians. These are the remains of a Cossack winter house built in the XVIII century. According to the researchers, they have not seen such finds for about 30 years. The archaeological site will shed light on how the island was inhabited in the XVI–XVIII centuries.

The size of one of the buildings of the winter garden is 2, 5x2 meters. Fragments of two furnaces, broken glass bottles, and a buckle were found in it, thanks to which scientists were able to determine the age of the structure. Judging by some items, the people who lived here had weapons with them. However, a small number of finds suggests that the main settlement was located somewhere nearby. It is possible that the archaeologists have an economic structure where coal was burned or saltpeter was produced. Some experts believe that this is a field kitchen.

As a rule, several Cossacks lived in winter quarters. They were small farms with a few inhabitants engaged in fishing, hunting, and farming. Winter gardens were known in the XV century. In other parts of Ukraine, large cities often appeared in the area of former winter gardens.
