During the Second World War, units of the Polish Air Force participated in combat operations on the territory of Great Britain. After serious defeats in France in 1940, part of the Polish air force was transferred to the British Isles. The pilots were required to wear British uniforms and fly the British flag. In addition, they took two oaths: to the Government of Poland and to King George VI. Since Polish names were difficult to pronounce for the British, pilots who flew in RAF squadrons were called by nicknames. After the war, many Poles decided to stay in the UK, because they did not want to return to Poland, which fell under the control of the USSR.
