The 19th century desk and chair is an interesting lot on the Violiti website. Antique furniture with its unique style, characteristic features and dignified condition is able to convey the spirit of its time.

The lot sold is writing table and chair, created by English craftsmen in the last quarter of the 19th century. Walnut solid wood and veneer are used as material. Carved elements and metal plates act as decoration.

As a rule, desks were created exclusively for correspondence, filling out documents. While the bureau with bookcases involved other occupations.

Nevertheless, the dressing table with two pedestals was considered the predecessor of the writing table. The same principle was followed here with legroom. And subsequently, the design of the tables in terms of variety has largely surpassed the design of dressing tables. And by the end of the 19th century, desks became standard types of cabinet furniture.

In the first decades of the 20th century, the design of desks was influenced by masters of different directions. This is modernism and constructivism and art deco.

For example, the Belgian craftsman Henri van de Velde managed to create a desk on pedestals with shelves. It was decorated with a lid with a rounded cut for greater seating comfort. Dixen desks had two slanted tables and an inclined lid. Such models were very popular in 19th century England.

The charm of antiquity and the skillful work of the craftsmen of the past centuries make antique furniture one of the most desirable acquisitions of collectors. And the sold lot is confirmation of this.
