In Ukraine, a coin was issued in honor of the observatory of the XVIII century

The Astronomical Observatory of Lviv University is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. In honor of this event, the NBU issued a commemorative coin with a face value of 5 hryvnia. The obverse of the nickel silver coin depicts a telescope that is installed in the observatory. Against the background of the telescope, you can see the starry sky. The reverse shows the name of the coin, the panorama of Lviv of the XVIII century, the city walls, the building of the observatory. In the foreground is a portrait of a scientist who is observing celestial objects. The circulation of the new product is 35 thousand copies.

The observatory was founded in 1771, but did not last for a little more than 10 years, and in 1783 it was closed. At the beginning of the XX century, a new observatory was built here, today the observation base is located near the city, near the village of Bryukhovichi. Astronomers observe the Sun, study gas nebulae, star clusters, and also observe artificial satellites of the Earth.
