The idea to build the Arc de Triomphe in Paris appeared in 1806 after several high-profile victories by Napoleon. But finally it was built and opened only on July 29, 1836.

The arch symbolized the invincibility of the "golden" army of the emperor. The author of the project is Jean-François Chalgren. It was he who created the foundation of the arch. But, after his death, the plan of the structure was changed more than once.

After Schallgren, the construction of the arch was done by many architects and everyone wanted to leave their "imprint" on the majestic structure.

Construction began on August 15, 1807 and was interrupted several times because of the aggravation of the political situation. 1814 was the end of Napoleon's rule, but the construction of the arch was not completed.

After the return of the Bourbon dynasty, the erection of the arch, which was to glorify the Emperor of France, was suspended and resumed after 8 years.

The arch was supposed to symbolize the victory of the French Republic over the Spanish kingdom. But in 1830 it was decided that the building should symbolize the greatness and courage of the French army during the Napoleonic wars and the Independent Republic.

July 29, 1836 construction was finally completed and there was a pompous opening. The height of the Arc de Triomphe is 50 meters, width - 45 meters. The structure itself has one central aisle, and on the southern and northern sides there is one narrow hole.

The walls of the arch are engraved with the names of 128 battles won by the Republican and Imperial army, as well as the names of 658 French commanders.
