In the last article, we talked about the ducats of the Holy Roman Empire and the Netherlands. In this article, we will focus on the ducats of the German states.

Let's start with the Saxon donative ducat (Sophiendukaten), first issued by order of Sophia of Brandenburg, mother of Elector Johann George I of Saxony (1611-1656), for Christmas 1616. The image: the symbolic eye of God, the initials "IHS" and a dove on one side; the swords of the electorate, the initials of the elector's mother "CS" and the circular legend "Wohl dem, der Freude an seinen Kindern erlebt" (German: happy is he to whom children bring joy) on the other side.

An outstanding ecclesiastical and statesman. He was a friend of Cardinal Mazarin, took an active part in the Congress of Versailles, and was one of the ideologists of the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the 30-year war.
