In October 2008, a group of Hungarian researchers discovered the remains of a Dutch merchant ship, which crashed off the coast of Brazil more than 300 years ago.

It was a sailing cargo ship - a fly called Voetboog. The high-speed three-masted vessel left the port of Batavia (now Jakarta) and sank near the Brazilian coast.

The ship carrying silk, spices, tea, Chinese and Japanese porcelain was owned by the Dutch West Indian company. It also had about 180,000 Dutch gold ducats. The total cost of treasures is estimated at 1 billion dollars.

When trying to cross the Atlantic, the ship may have got into a storm and sank near the Brazilian state of Pernambuco on May 29, 1700.
