Almost 57 years old Ukrainian teacher Kristina Alchevskaya managed to maintain a women's Sunday school in Kharkov. Her husband allocated money for this.

At different times, this institution was able to educate 17,000 women. Probably, this number of pupils was due to free education, a variety of directions in teaching and a special pedagogical approach of the teaching staff.

The Kharkov Sunday school taught history, geography, physics, chemistry, natural science, literature, hygiene, jurisprudence. Teaching was conducted on Sundays and public holidays from 10 to 14 hours.

Kristina Alchevskaya was born in the town of Borzna in the Chernihiv region. She was born in a teacher's family. She mastered the basics of science, hiding behind the door of the room, where the seminarian taught the reading and writing of the brothers. The fact that the brothers passed in the gymnasium, the sister studied their own textbooks on their own. Then the girl collected poor children to teach them to read and write.

After the death of her husband, who helped her with the maintenance of the school, Christina began to do business in her own tea shop. Revenues from it provided the life of Christina and her six children. During the Revolution all property was expropriated.
