Since the days of the Kiev prince Izyaslav, the testimony of his wife has been preserved only in the Paterik of the Kiev-Pechersky Monastery.

Gertrude Polska was the founder of the nunnery of St. Nicholas, who once saved the Caves Monastery from her husband's anger, which he ordered to disperse.

Perhaps Gertrude would have remained, like most other princesses, a small note on the shores of history, had it not been for the tragic story of her husband's expulsion, and their long wanderings through Europe.

Twice Izyaslav Yaroslavich was driven from Kiev.

The first time the rebellious Kievites in 1068, and then the brother of Gertrude Kazimir helped him to return the grand table.

The second time in 1073 - brothers Izyaslav Svyatoslav and Vsevolod Yaroslavichi; This time only Gertrude's appeal to Pope Gregory VII caused the German Emperor and the Polish prince to provide Izyaslav with help.

The consequence of this long struggle and wandering was the illustrated Codex (Prayer Book) of Gertrude. Created at the end of the tenth century in the abbey of Reichenau by order of Archbishop Egbert for the cathedral in Trier.

This code as a dowry Gertrude came to Russia. It was supplemented by nine dozen prayers, the author of which undoubtedly was Gertrude herself, as well as five miniatures of Byzantine letters, among which, among other things, the icon of the Virgin of the Caves was recreated, Gertruda's eldest son Yaropolk and his wife Kunigunda-Irina, and Gertrude herself.

At the beginning of the XII century the Code of Gertrude was exported to Poland and is now stored in the National Archaeological Museum of the city of Cividale del Friuli (Italy).
