This style got its name thanks to the painting by Claude Monet "Impression, soleil levant". The first important exhibition of the Impressionists was held from April 15 to May 15, 1874 in the studio of photographer Nadar. There were represented 30 artists, a total of 165 works.

Little-known journalist Louis Leroy in his article called the group "impressionists" to express his disdain. Artists, from the call, took this epithet, later he took root, lost his original negative meaning and went into active use.

Impressionism, as a rule, aims to work in the open air. Painting in this direction is intended to convey the light sensation of the master.

Key characteristics of impressionism include: thin, relatively small, barely visible strokes; accurately transmitted lighting change; open composition; the presence of any movement; unusual vision of objects.

Bright representatives of impressionism: Pierre Renoir, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet.
