August 22, 1485 in the last, decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, the army of Henry Tudor with the support of troops from French and Welsh mercenaries, defeated the troops of Richard III Plantagenet in the battle near Bosworth, in which the king himself was killed.

1770 - during his first round-the-world expedition, Captain James Cook landed on the east coast of Australia, which he called New South Wales and declared possession of the British crown.

1812 - Swiss traveler and Orientalist Johann Ludwig Burckhardt found near the Jordanian city of Amman the ruins of the ancient city of Petra, in which, according to legend, Moses extracted water from the cliff.

1864 - in Geneva, representatives of 12 states adopted the Convention on the care of wounded and sick soldiers of the warring armies. The Geneva Convention guaranteed the inviolability of military hospitals, medical personnel and the rights of the wounded who were captured.
