The first marriage announcement was published in 1695 in the collection "How to improve the economy and trade." If you think about it, the title of this collection has nothing to do with the topic of dating and marriage. But this is only at first glance.
In the past, matchmakers and other similar intermediaries helped find couples for mutually beneficial unions. It was seen as something akin to a deal. A successful marriage was a means of multiplying the state or saving from ruin. That is why the first marriage ads included information on income and dowry.
It happened that the future husband and wife not only talked about their appearance, but also openly offered to marry with benefit for the cause.
