32-year-old test pilot captain Oleg Sokolovsky December 26, 1948 for the first time in the USSR on an experimental jet fighter LA-176 reached the speed of sound.

He was born in Kiev on December 25, 1916. He graduated from Kherson flying school. Then Borisoglebsk school of military pilots. He became her instructor pilot.

From 1944 he headed the squadron of the school of military pilots in Rustava. The following year, he became the flight commander of the Higher Aviation Officer School of Air Force air combat.

In 1948 he began working in the Lavochkin Design Bureau near Moscow. Conducted factory tests fighter jet La-176. Then, at an altitude of 10,000 to 6,000 m, he reached a speed of 1105 km / h. By January 1949, he made another 6 supersonic flights.

On February 3, 1949, captain Oleg Sokolovsky died during trials.
