Until the middle of the XIX century, on the Dnieper River floated mainly on rafts: they transported people, timber, grain and other goods. The beginning of regular shipping along the whole course was laid in 1857.

In the 40s, the most important port of the Dnieper was Kiev (1/2 of the turnover of the basin). The second most important, at the same time river and sea port, was Kherson, where petroleum products were loaded from the sea to the Dnieper, and wood, manganese ore, bread and metals - from the Dnieper to the sea. Dnepropetrovsk, Cherkassy, Kremenchug, Zaporozhye and other ports followed in importance.

In Soviet times, the Dnieper regularly carried out both cargo transportation and passenger flights of suburban and long-distance traffic. The photographs of the 1960s show mainly recreational and tourist transportation.
