These photographs of the Carpathian Hutsuls of the first quarter of the 20th century, which were made by Nikolay Senkovsky, a famous Ukrainian photo artist. He lived in the village of Zhabier in the Hutsul region, Verkhovyna since 1920.

In the interwar period, Hutsuls were often shot by European photographers who came to the Carpathians in search of exclusive material. This topic interested and Ukrainian artists.

The Hutsuls are an ethnographic group of Ukrainians, descendants of an ancient tribe of chronicle streets living in the Carpathians. Hutsuls are almost the only group of the Ukrainian ethnos for which sheep farming has always been the leading sector of the economy.
