Photos of Laplanders taken by an astrophysicist in the century before last

A series of images about the life of Laplanders, taken by Amateur photographer Sophus Tromholt is listed as a UNESCO heritage. The author was an astrophysicist and came to Lapland in 1882 to investigate the nature of the Aurora. Communicating with the local population, he became interested in the culture and life of the people, and decided to capture the lives of people on film.

Tromholt had come to the North more than once to film the unusual phenomenon. In Norway, he founded a research center and made every effort to get a frame. Unfortunately, the equipment of those times did not allow you to take a high-quality picture of the radiance.

The Sami called the scientist a Star Man because of his strange interest in the sky. The researcher was respectful of the indigenous people, they did not mind posing in front of the camera. In 2013, these photos were included in the UNESCO heritage list as part of the "Memory of the world "program. In 2019, a book dedicated to the work of Sophus Tromholt was published in Norway.
