Another successful return of the artifact to its homeland. Mexico gave Nigeria an ancient bronze statuette created more than a thousand years ago after it was tried to be smuggled into the North American country. The place of origin of the artifact is the city of Ife, where figures of various deities of the Yoruba peoples were created.
The sculpture depicts a man in a headdress, who sits cross-legged and holds an object in his hands. The figure was seized at the airport in Mexico city. The find was sent to the national Institute of anthropology and history of Mexico, where experts confirmed that the sculpture comes from Nigeria. After that, the artifact was handed over to the Nigerian Ambassador to Mexico, Aminu Iyaw.
Ife is located in the South-West of Nigeria. This is one of the centers of West African civilization. For many years, bronze statuettes of rulers, terracotta heads of gods and other similar items have been found here.
