The bleak everyday life of Bradford in the 1960s
In the 1960s, the housing crisis led to more than 3 million people in Britain living in homes that were not suitable for habitation. Photographer Nick Hedges captured on film the living conditions in which the British found themselves. One of the cities visited by the photographer was Bradford - he came here in 1969. Hedges made notes about the situation in the city, visited houses, recorded everything he saw on the camera. The images were taken as part of the National campaign for homeless Shelter, launched in response to the housing crisis. Hedges goal was to show real life in the slums - the images were used in booklets and posters that were distributed in other cities.
