The victory of the chimney sweep Maurice Garena ended the first cycle race Tour de France. She went on the route Paris-Lyon-Marseille-Toulouse-Bordeaux-Nantes-Paris on July 19, 1903. It was organized by the sports newspaper L'Auto - today it is the magazine L'Equipe.

The most prestigious multi-day race in the world was invented by Henri Degrange and Geo Lefevre, editor and journalist of the sports edition of Avto. They wanted to raise the circulation of the newspaper. For 19 days of the race he jumped from 25 thousand to 65 thousand.

6 stages with a length from 268 to 471 km the winner overcame with an average speed of 25.7 km / h. From 60 people to the finish, 21 drivers came. The winner Maurice Garin from Rheims defeated this distance in 94.5 hours.

A native of Italy worked as a chimney sweep, later he opened a bicycle shop. For the victory received 6075 francs - 13 monthly salaries of the chimney-sweep.

Garen became not only the first winner of the famous race, but the following year, when he again won, became her first disqualified champion. For the prescription of the years and the loss of documents, no one knows exactly what caused this decision.
