Sculptor from America Anna Coleman Watts Ladd moved to France in 1917.
There she founded a workshop for making masks for the faces of soldiers who suffered during the First World War. Her Anna Coleman Watts Ladd called "Studio portrait masks."
The ideological inspirer of the woman was sculptor Francis Darwent Wood. He was one of the first to create masks for mutilated soldiers in his "Tin Noses Shop".
The faces of some men were so disfigured that they could not be recognized. Their wounds were considered the most tragic, since most such military men were doomed to live in complete isolation.
In 1932, the French government awarded Anna Ladd the Order of the Legion of Honor.
