October 16: "Battle of the Nations", decree on the revival of the Cossacks and the Society of Leo

On October 16, 1813, the “Battle of the Nations” began near Leipzig, in which the troops of France, the Rhine Union, Poland, Austria, Prussia, Russia and Sweden participated; ended with the crushing defeat of Napoleon’s army and his first abdication.

1846 - at the Boston clinic (USA) during the operation, dentist William Morton performed a public demonstration of ether anesthesia for the first time.

1918 - at the congress of the Free Cossacks in Chigirin, delegates from 5 Ukrainian provinces and Kuban elected the ataman of the Free Cossacks, General Pavel Skoropadsky. On the same day he issued a decree on the revival of the Cossacks, in which about 150,000 families were recorded.

1946 - Sentences of the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal for ten of the supreme Nazi leaders of the Third Reich sentenced to death penalty are put into effect in the gymnasium of the Nuremberg Prison.

1987 - The Lion Society was created in Lviv - one of the first independent organizations in the Ukrainian SSR, created by a group of nationally conscious youth, since the spring of that year, voluntarily worked on the restoration of monuments of the Lychakiv cemetery.

1998 - Augusto Pinochet is arrested in London, the extradition of which was demanded by the Spanish government, accusing the former dictator of torturing and killing Spanish citizens during his rule.
