The task of Violity is to promote the dissemination of knowledge about the ancient history of our country. And if in the last article, jewelry belonging to the aristocratic elite of the protostate of the Goths was presented a beautiful pair of brooches , then today we will try to go back about a century and present an object that is not so bright, but has an interesting historical context. This is a Roman legionary situla. As you remember, after the defeat of the Dacian state by Emperor Trajan, the borders of the Roman Empire were in close proximity to the modern territory of Ukraine. A huge number of finds of not only Roman coins, but also artifacts of the 1st-3rd centuries and even personal items, such as diplomas of Roman legionnaires, indicates that the relationship between the population of the modern territory of Ukraine and the Roman Empire went beyond trade, with a fortunate combination of circumstances the territory of modern Ukraine could become a province of the Roman Empire. Moreover, a group of architects, based on the first plans of Kyiv in the 18th century and the mass finds of Roman coins and artifacts on the territory of Podil, suggested the existence of a Roman trading settlement on the territory of Kyiv (Podil) and its identification with the settlement Azagarium, indicated on the map of Claudius Ptolemy in 2nd century. The cultural layers of the Roman era lie deep enough, so the exact answer will be given by systematic studies in the future. Let's go back to situla. This type of dishes was popular among the tribes that inhabited Italy at the turn of 2-1 thousand BC. The situla of a simple Roman legionnaire is perhaps a memory of a Roman veteran who, having visited many parts of the empire, like many of his comrades, chose the best country he had ever seen for life - we now call this country Ukraine.
