October 17: Slobodyshchensky treatise, Cadillac car and inverted Matisse's Boat

On October 17, 1660, the Slobodyshchensky treatise was signed - an agreement between hetman Yury Khmelnitsky and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He canceled the Pereyaslavsky articles that were unprofitable for Ukraine in 1659, broke off the alliance with the Moscow tsar and restored the state connection of Ukraine with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

1888 - The first issue of National Geographic magazine, the official publication of the National Geographic Society of the USA, was released. Due to the lack of materials, at first it was printed irregularly, only later it was published monthly, and from the second half of the 20th century became world-famous due to its photo essay on exotic countries and people.

1902 - The first Cadillac car was launched in Detroit. The division of the concern General Motors for the production of luxury cars was founded as the Cadillac Automobile Company by the entrepreneur William Murphy and the outstanding engineer Henry Leland.

1938 - Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on the establishment of the medals "For Courage" and "For Military Merit".

1962 - Henri Matisse's painting "The Boat" was exhibited at the New York Museum of Modern Art. Only two months later, on December 2, it was accidentally discovered that the picture was hanging upside down.

1988 - Beethoven’s 10th symphony, considered to be missing, was first performed in London. It was restored by the English explorer Barry Cooper on the basis of the great composer's papers found in Berlin, containing fragments and sketches of a symphony, so it is difficult to consider it to be in line with Beethoven’s true intention.
