June 18: Battle of Pate, the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo and the bronze monument of Taras Shevchenko in Kaniv

June 18, 1429 during the Hundred Years' War at the Battle of Pata, the French troops inflicted a crushing defeat to the British under the command of John Talbot and John Fastolph. This was a turning point in the campaign of Luarskoe, the success of which enabled the advance to the north and crown the Dauphin of Charles VII in Reims, and the last phase of the Hundred Years War as a whole, which led to the complete defeat of England.

1583 - Richard Martin in London issued the first insurance certificate. He received William Gibbons, and the insurance amount was 383 pounds.

1754 - laid the fortress of St. Elizabeth, later - Elisavetgrad, Kirovograd, now - Kropivnitsky.

1782 - in Switzerland, the last known case of execution for witchcraft is recorded - convicted of an attempted poisoning Anna Geldi was beheaded in the central square of Glarus.

1815 - near the town of Waterloo, near Brussels, the battle took place (Nina - Belgium), in which the French, led by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, defeated the unification of the strength of Anglo-Dutch-German and Prussian troops, putting an end to the Napoleonic era in the history of Europe.

1881 - The emperors of Germany, Austria and Russia signed a secret agreement, the "Union of Three Emperors", under which its members pledged not to provide support to any of the states that attacked one of the members of the union.

1903 - in San Francisco, the first motor rally across the continent was launched. Its members three months later finished in New York.

1932 - The first international conference of national basketball associations of Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland was held in Geneva. It was decided to establish the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

1939 - in Kanev a bronze monument to Taras Shevchenko was opened by sculptor Matvei Manizer and architect Yevgeny Levinson.

1948 - Recording studio Columbia Records introduced the first long-LP (LP) plate - a 12-inch plate designed for playback at 33 rpm.

1986 - over the Grand Canyon (USA), a DHC-6 Twin Otter and a Bell 206 helicopter collided. 25 people were killed.

2009 - NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter space probe was launched from the cosmodrome at Cape Canaveral using the Atlas V launch vehicle to explore the Moon.
