On January 22, 1506, Pope Julius II invites the Swiss Guards, who have since guarded the papal residence, to serve in the Vatican. The Swiss Guard consisted of employed Swiss citizens, unmarried and experienced in the art of war. Their colorful uniform was designed by Rafael Santi.

1863 - The January Uprising began in Poland - a gentry uprising on the lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which was aimed at its restoration within the borders of 1772.

1904 - the foundation of the Zaporozhye Regional Universal Scientific Library named after A. M. Gorky.

1918 - The Ukrainian Central is pleased with its IV Universal declared the independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

1944 - The Anzio-Nettun strategic military operation of the armed forces of the United States and Great Britain against the German troops began.

1963 - Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Konrad Adenauer and French President Charles de Gaulle signed the Franco-German Treaty of Friendship in Paris (Elysee Treaty).

1970 - The first regular flight of the Boeing 747 with passengers on board took place - the plane took off from New York and landed in London after six and a half hours.

1987 - Phil Donahue became the first American presenter to conduct television talk shows in the USSR.

1992 - Canadian of Ukrainian origin, Robert Bodnar, thanks to participation in the Space Shuttle program, becomes the first Canadian and the first neurologist in space.
