Archaeologists from the Mari State University discovered a treasure trove of old coins. They turned out to be 157 silver coins of the end of the 14th century.

The place of detection is the territory of the Selitrenny settlement, located on the territory of the Astrakhan region and being a monument of archeology of federal significance.

According to experts, the coins found were used for monetary circulation. Initially, they were stored in a canvas bag, which eventually became useless. But despite this, he was able to provide them with adequate safety in such numbers.

The find was made during the excavations on the territory of the settlement, and the gopher rendered assistance to archaeologists. He pushed some of the coins out, as they prevented him from moving underground. The work of experts began after collecting coins from the surface.

According to scientists, this treasure of silver coins of the end of the XIV century will make it possible to determine the features of the minting of coins of the Middle Ages, as well as the system of money circulation of the Golden Horde.
