Turkmen archaeologists have found a treasure of XIII century silver coins on the border with Afghanistan. The find was made on the outskirts of the ancient city of Mehno.

The coins were found in the mausoleum of the Sufi Sheikh Abu Said Abul Khayr. He was considered holy. Archaeologists have found 91 dirham.

“Having lain for many centuries in the dampness, the coins oxidized, stuck together and were not subjected to reading. After thoroughly cleaning them in the laboratory, the specialists managed to establish that these were silver dirhams of various coinage,” the state news agency of Turkmenistan reports.

Most of the coins have an inscription with the name of Abaga-Khan, who ruled the state of the Ilkhanids in 1265-1282. On other dirhems, the name Argun is read. Scientists believe that it was Argun Khan, who ruled 1284-1291, or the Turkmen Argun Shah, who ruled Khorasan. The remaining eight dirhams also belong to the state of the Ilkhanids, but it is not possible to read the specific name of the ruler.
