During archaeological research in northern Poland, archaeologists found hundreds of silver coins of the 17th century. Excavations were carried out on the site of an ancient temple.

Coins were discovered under the foundation of the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle in the city of Barczewo in northern Poland. According to the statement of Arkadiusz Koperkevich, head of archaeological research, well-preserved coins were in the found pot.

“This is an outstanding find when it comes to its context and the load of scientific information. This is directly related to the local monastery and the history of the Warmia region, ”he said.

The coins found date back to the 1620s during the reign of King Sigismund III. All of them were placed in ceramic dishes in the northwest corner of the altar. It is likely that they were hidden by the monks.

According to scientists, the concealment of coins occurred during the time of the greatest prosperity of the Bernardine monastery, when the Order received numerous subsidies from the bishops of Warmia. Although this does not provide an answer to the question of why the coins were nevertheless hidden in this way.

“We will do our best to present the treasure in the temple in Barczewo, at a special exhibition site,” said Przemyslaw Gorek, representative of Gorek Restauro, general contractor for the work in the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle.
