Coin "250 years of the Astronomical Observatory of the Lviv University"
We present another NBU coin, issued in honor of the achievements of Ukrainian astronomers. This time, a coin with the image of the observatory of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Europe, came to our attention. The observatory was founded in 1771, which is associated with the beginning of the development of astronomy in Lviv. The study of celestial objects in Lviv was then at the same level as in Berlin, Vilnius or Vienna, since the observatory was not inferior in equipment to similar European institutions of that time. Scientists were trained at the Lviv University, where a separate course in astronomy was specially introduced. The main directions of modern activity are the study of the Sun, stars, the interstellar medium, galaxies and the universe as a whole. An important area of activity is also laser-ranging, photometric and positional observations of artificial Earth satellites. A set of telescopes for such observations is in the register of scientific objects that make up the national heritage of Ukraine.
On the reverse of the coin there is a composition symbolizing the time of the first documented astronomical observations in Lviv. On the mirror background of the outline of the panorama of Lviv of the XVIII century, a collective image of the then astronomer is depicted, at the bottom - the city walls, against which is the inscription 250 / YEARS and the building of the observatory; at the top of the inscription in a semicircle - the Astronomical Observatory of the Lviv University. On the obverse of the coin, against the background of a stylized starry sky, the small State Emblem of Ukraine (above), under which the inscriptions - UKRAINE / 2021; in the center, on a mirror background, is the telescope of the Lviv University Observatory; the nominal value is FIVE HRYVNIA (at the bottom of the semicircle), the logo of the Banknote and Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (to the right of the telescope).
