How did the first "zebra" appear?

The world's first "zebra" appeared in the English city of Slough on October 31, 1951.

Before this place of transition was designated by metal circles. They appeared in 1934. Then the British Minister of Transport, Lord Khor-Belish, ordered to put striped posts with orange lanterns at the top of the roads in places of pedestrian crossings.

In 1946, Slow created a road safety unit at the Road Safety Research Laboratory. The unit studied the data of accidents, traffic, arrangement of intersections, street lighting, safety of cars and pedestrian crossings. They modeled transitions with different markup.
