Modeling began its development in the period of Ancient Egypt. Clay and wooden copies of ships found by archaeologists date back to the 10th century. BC. In the Middle Ages, modeling became in demand in educational institutions. On reduced models, future officers were taught military strategies and tactics.

Officially, the first bench model was released in the UK in 1932. It was a ready-made set of parts for the assembly of the Supermarine S6B aircraft. The technology for the production of prefabricated models has changed many times since then. The manufacturing industry has reached a huge scale.
