In 1936, screenwriter Rich Hogan presented a story about the adventures of a cat and a mouse to the animation department of the film company Metro Goldwyn Mauer. Young directors William Hanna and Joseph Barber took up the creation of the first cartoon.
Work on the first series “The Cat Gets a Kick” ended in 1939, and in February 1940 the film was released. Americans often accused screenwriters of excessive cruelty in a cartoon, racism, and the promotion of smoking and alcohol.
