In the middle of May, 1919, the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences adopted the “Naiholov rules of Ukrainian spelling.”

Work on the document in the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences began 2 months before. They created a separate spelling and terminology commission headed by Academician Agafangel Krymsky. In 1918, the spelling rules were supplemented and streamlined.

The modified spelling was approved by the General Assembly of the Academy of Sciences. Published it in 1921 under the name "Ukrainian rules of Ukrainian language." He received the status of the first Ukrainian academic spelling.

These rules contributed to the rapprochement of the Western spelling tradition with the general Ukrainian spelling. The rules recognized and began to popularize in Galicia, Bukovina and Volyn. In 1922, based on them, the Scientific Society. Taras Shevchenko in Lviv adopted the "rules of writing".

“Ukrainian rules of Ukrainian spelling” had 14 printed pages and consisted of 2 sections. The first section consisted of 32 paragraphs devoted to the spelling of Ukrainian words. The second section consisted of 14 paragraphs devoted to the spelling of words of foreign origin.

The spelling of 1921 became the basis for the compilation of all subsequent ones. With certain changes and corrections, it was published in 1928, 1933, 1946, 1960 and 1990. The last edition of the Ukrainian spelling with changes was carried out in 1993.
