From a camp at an altitude of 8120 meters, British school teacher George Mallory and Oxford student Andrew Irwin began climbing to the top of Mount Everest in the Himalayan mountain range on June 8, 1924. Then they were seen once. Miller's body was found 75 years later in the permafrost at the top.

For the first time, the height of the mountain, known as Peak XV, was identified in 1856 by the participants of the British geodesic expedition. The height of the mountain on the border of China and Tibet is 8848.43 meters above sea level. Since then, the country began to fight for the status of the first conqueror of the summit.

The British Royal Geographical Society organized the Mount Everest Committee. His task is to prepare and carry out an expedition to the top. The veteran of the First World War, the best British mountaineer George Mallory, was immediately invited to join the first expedition. The participants of the second expedition next year rose to a height of more than 8,300 meters. But the campaign turned - in an avalanche killed seven Sherpas - the indigenous people of Nepal, who helped with the ascent.

The third expedition of 12 people led by General Charles Bruce. The first tried to climb from the camp of George Mallory and Jeffy Bruce - only 700 meters passed without oxygen cylinders and the exhausted returned. The next day, Edward Norton and Howard Somervell climbed to an altitude of 8570 meters. Some 300 meters remained to the top, but they did not reach due to bad weather.

On June 8, 1924, George Mallory and Andrew Irwin left the camp. The last time they were seen by the cameraman and geologist Noel Odell. The rise should have lasted 11 hours. With climbers took oxygen with a stock of only 8 hours. They have not returned. Climbers were not looking - weather conditions did not allow. Missing Mallori and Irvine in the UK were called national heroes. The funeral service was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, in London on October 17.

In 1999, American climbers found the frozen body of Mallory at an altitude of 8159 meters. There was a big wound on his head. Irwin's body was never found. Also, the exact time and place of death of each of them has not been established. Climbers did not come to the conclusion: at the time of his death, Mallory descended or only climbed to the summit.
