The first World Cup in Uruguay began on July 13, 1930 at the Pocitos stadium, playing Mexico-France, which ended with a score of 1-4. All matches in four groups were held in Montevideo and the national teams of Uruguay, Argentina, USA and Yugoslavia went into the semifinals.

The first world champion was the home team, which on July 30 at the Centenario stadium, specially built for the competition, which held a record 90,000 spectators, won the Argentines with a score of 4-2.

The first world championship was so successful that the desire to take part in the second rally was found by a larger number of teams than planned for the final stage, and the selection tournament was first held to determine the 16 finalists.

So, at one time the European teams in the majority refused to go to Montevideo, the Uruguay national team did not go to Italy, which in 1934 and became the second world champion in football.
