In early 1958, a contest was announced for the best projects of the stations of the Kiev subway. In those years, the subway worked without turnstiles, and for travel needed ordinary tickets.

The commission studied about 80 projects. Of these, only 5 were selected. They were implemented during the construction of the stations Vokzalnaya, Khreshchatyk, Arsenalnaya and Dnepr. They entered the first phase of the construction of the Kiev Metro.

The first stage was opened on November 6, 1960. It was a section of the Svyatoshin-Brovary line, 5.2 km long. The first driver, who officially opened the train, was Ivan Ivan Vinogradov from Kiev.
The second site was opened in 1963 - the station Polytechnic Institute and the Bolshevik Plant. Then followed the stations Hydropark, Levoberezhnaya and Darnitsa in 1965.

At the station Khreshchatyk in the summer of 1960 began to build a second exit toward the Institute Street. It was opened on September 4, 1965. At the same time, the central hall of the station was extended by 40 m.
