After the industrial revolution in England and Ireland, it became a popular profession of human alarm clock, which in the original sounds like a knocker-up. People were awakened with a long stick or cane, the end of which was knocked on the door or window, if the residents lived on the second floor and above. Sometimes they used a special tube through which they shot peas at the glass. The work did not bring much income – a week knocker-upper could get a few pence. Most often this was done by elderly people or constables, thus receiving a small additional income.
