In 1871, the Grand opening of the Mont Cenis tunnel, laid under the Alps and connecting France and Italy, took place. The path is laid in the area Of the fréjus pass (Fréjus), its length is 13.7 km. In Italy, the tunnel goes to the city of Bardonecchia (Bardonecchia), in France, trains leave for the Savoy commune of modane (Modane).

The idea to build a tunnel on this section was first proposed in 1832. At that time, the territory located on both sides of the mountain range was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia (Regno di Sardegna) – a state that existed until 1861. After unsuccessful attempts to promote the project in the government, in 1857, king Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia (Vittorio Emanuele II) finally allowed the construction of the tunnel.

However, in the midst of construction work, the Treaty of Turin was signed, according to which the borders of Savoy were changed. Due to changes in the political map, the Western side of the tunnel was now in France. The project was on the verge of collapse, but as a result, the French not only agreed to continue construction, but also allocated additional funds.

According to the original plan, all work was planned to be completed by 1884. But thanks to technological progress (improvement of the jackhammer, other significant improvements), the process has accelerated so much that the completion of construction took place much earlier.
