The battle of Brunkeberg was one of the most important battles in the long-running conflict, during which the Swedes tried not only to preserve their independence, but also to break the Kalmar Union of 1397. Formed at the end of the XIV century. the Union, which included Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, was led by Queen Margaret, the Danish ruler. After the Queen's death, Sweden had its own king, Karl Bunde. He was going to be replaced by the Danish monarch – Christian I, which the Swedes did not like very much.

To prepare for the battle, Sweden signed a truce with Denmark for a month. Before the clash, both armies were stationed at Brunkeberg. The battle, which began on the morning of October 10, lasted four hours. The Swedes advanced archers, who showered arrows on the enemy camp. The Danes fired their guns in response. The Swedish commander Sten Sture led the troops to attack, but the attack failed miserably. Due to heavy losses, the Swedes had to urgently rebuild.

The Danes launched a counterattack and were so engrossed in the battle that they did not notice the attack from the other side – the garrison of the defenders of Stockholm advanced along the river, landed on the Bank and attacked near the monastery of St. Nicholas. Claras. Despite the fact that the Danish troops were not at all prepared for this turn of events, they still managed to inflict a great lesson on the Swedes. However, in the end, the Danish army fled in a panic: someone managed to cross to the mainland on the bridge before it collapsed, the rest retreated on ships.
