Last week, users of the auction Violity could notice a rare gold Scudo (Scudo d'oro) of the Republic of Lucca (Italy). The coin was minted in 1552. The obverse depicts the Holy face (il Santo Volto), on the reverse you can see the flag of the Republic, which is known since the 13th century, as well as the titulature of Emperor Charles IV. In 1370, Charles IV granted the Republic independence and approved the flag. Lucca's independence was first recorded in 1119. During the XII–XIII centuries, the city fought for the right to own vast neighboring territories. The main opponent of Lucca were in Florence, which also claimed the championship in Tuscany. Later in Lucca there was an open confrontation between the black and white Guelphs (guelfi). Great power city reached under the rule of the commander Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli. The independent Republic of Lucca lasted quite a long time, until the time of Napoleon.
