Novgorod hryvnia part 5

We continue to publish hryvnias of the Novgorod type found on the territory of Ukraine and exhibited on Violiti. Part first part second a> part third and part fourth contain descriptions of this type of hryvnia, the difference between this type of hryvnia and Kyiv type hryvnias and illustrations of interesting specimens.

In the new article, as in the previous ones, detailed images of hryvnias of the Novgorod type are presented. Like the previous ones, these instances contain graffiti. These are short marks in the form of letters and symbols, which indicated either the ownership of a given hryvnia or its origin (from whom it was received or in repayment of which debt it was received). Each such inscription is unique and is the most valuable evidence of medieval history.
