Novgorod hryvnia part 3

We continue to publish hryvnias of the Novgorod type found on the territory of Ukraine and exhibited on Violiti. Part first and part second contain descriptions of this type of hryvnia and illustrations of interesting specimens.

The new article presents the hryvnia and half, which are especially interesting. They are scratched with graffiti - short marks in the form of letters and symbols, which marked either the ownership of a given hryvnia or its origin (from whom it was received or in repayment of which debt it was received). Each such inscription is unique and is the most valuable evidence of medieval history.

All types of hryvnias, as well as coins of pre-Petrine Russia are presented in this section.
