After the death of Catherine the First, the wife of Peter the Great and the Empress, the only legal heir and the last direct male descendant of the Romanovs was the 11-year-old Peter, the grandson of Peter the Great, from his son Alexei.

The talented boy did not receive a systematic education, after accession to the throne he spent all his time in amusement, leading an idle lifestyle. During the reign of the young emperor, the government restored the autonomy of Ukraine, allowing the election of a hetman.
